What is a Production Designer?
Production Design is the creation and organization of the physical world surrounding a film story. The designer's main focus and responsibility is the design of the sets. The first step on a film project is to develop a 'design concept'. Usually, this is done in collaboration with the director. Many different techniques are employed to visualize this concept - illustrations, architectural models, 3D designs, virtual walkthroughs, physical sample boards, etc. Once everyone agrees on the style choices, the concept is then used as the basis for all design decisions by the entire art department. The ultimate goal is to give each project a unique visual look.
There is an entire team of talented individuals who comprise the art department, set dressing department, props, construction, scenic, and greens department and all work with the designer to create 'the world' of each film. I have been extremely lucky to have worked with some of the very best art department crews over these years. Their extreme talents make my job so much easier as well as making our work days so much more enjoyable. Without their collaboration, none of the work displayed on this site would have been possible.
